At 7:11 PM Friday January 20, 2023 the Burlington and Mediapolis Fire Departments responded to a reported structure fire at 9054 113th Street, rural Burlington in Tama Township. Burlington firefighters arrived at 7:16 PM to find a livestock barn fully engulfed in flames. A box alarm was struck calling in ten off duty Burlington firefighters, and bringing water tenders and manpower from Gladstone and West Burlington Fire Departments. In addition to the barn, the heat from that fire caused damage to the house, a utility shed, a car, and a camper. Firefighters brought the fire under control by 7:47 PM.
The property is owned and occupied by Steve and Linda Barry. They were not at home at the time of the fire. Eleven goats and several cats perished as a result of the fire. Damage estimates are still being assessed and they are insured.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Burlington Fire Department and is not considered suspicious.
Firefighters were assisted at the scene by REC. There were no injuries. Firefighters cleared the scene at 10:43 PM.
