At 3:56 PM Wednesday December 21, 2016 the Burlington Fire Department responded to 316 Spring Street in Burlington for smoke coming from the residence. Police and fire units’ arrived 2 minutes later to find smoke visible from the vents and eaves of the 3 unit apartment house. Firefighters located the fire in the kitchen of a second floor apartment. The fire was contained to the kitchen with heat and smoke damage throughout the apartment. The other apartment units sustained some smoke and water damage.
All 3 apartments were unoccupied at the time of the fire. The fire was discovered and reported by neighbors upon seeing the smoke. The apartment house, owned by Gary Neff of Burlington, sustained an estimated $7,000 to the structure and $3,000 to contents. The property is insured. One of the apartment units had a working smoke detector.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing by the Burlington police and fire departments and is considered suspicious.
10 on-duty Burlington firefighters responded to the call and were assisted by 4 West Burlington firefighters responding on automatic aid. The Red Cross was called to assist 3 displaced tenants. The fire department remained on the scene until 8:40 PM. There were no injuries.
