The combined Streets and Sewer Division stays busy maintaining and cleaning streets, providing snow removal, maintaining sanitary, storm and combination sewer system and maintaining the City Street Sign Program. Maintaining the street system consists of patching potholes, spot pavement repairs, crack sealing street cracks, maintaining all street signage, annually painting and striping streets along with street cleaning 4 to 6 times annually. Sewer maintenance consists of jetting or cleaning sewers, televising problem areas, vac cleaning combination-storm sewer inlets and making spot repairs to the sewer system including manholes and inlets.
The Street Division of the Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining and repairing approximately 167 center-line miles of streets in the City.
Everyday operations include sign maintenance, street sweeping and repairing small sized roadway and sewer failures, including:
Concrete and asphalt repairs
Cleaning, repairing and televising storm and sanitary sewers
Retro reflectivity requirements for Sign Maintenance
Repairing gravel roads and alleys
Flood control when necessary
Typical duties change with every season:
Spring – Street and alley repairs following the freeze / thaw damage that follows winter weather and crack sealing
Summer - Street construction, concrete repairs, asphalt repairs and painting traffic markings and school zones.
Fall - Crack sealing, concrete repair, storm sewer vacuuming and street sweeping
Winter - Snow and ice control, pothole patching and crack sealing as weather permits.
